X Marks: Massimo Vignelli | BONES

Mas?simo Vignelli?is design in the flesh. With his wife Lella, he has spent his life mak?ing things, and mak?ing things look and func?tion bet?ter. His chal?lenge has always been ?tak?ing the com?mon?place and improv?ing?it.?

Por?trait for Eye Mag?a?zine by Maria Spann. The image links to Eye?s fea?ture on Mr Vignelli.

I attended the Brand New Con?fer?ence held this past Sep?tem?ber at the School of Visual Arts The?ater in New York. Mr Vignelli was a fea?tured par?tic?i?pant? he sat down for a con?ver?sa?tion with Armin Vit of Under?Con?sid?er?a?tion. Hear?ing Mr Vignelli speak is like drink?ing a design elixir. It fills me with a warm feel?ing that reminds me why I was attracted to graphic design in the first?place.

The con?fer?ence had its own after-party where I got to speak to Mr Vignelli one-on-one. Meet?ing your idols is chal?leng?ing. What to say? How do you con?vey what they mean to your life and work? I chose to relate that I?d first heard him speak 29 years ear?lier at a graphic design con?fer?ence at my alma mater RIT. Vignelli was the keynote speaker at that event in 1983 orga?nized by Pro?fes?sor R Roger Rem?ing?ton. Even then he was estab?lished as a key fig?ure in the his?tory of graphic design. His last?ing works for Amer?i?can Air?lines, the New York Sub?way Map (that he recently updated in print and app forms), Bloom?ing?dales, Knoll and many oth?ers had secured his place amongst design greats. I also thanked him for his inspi?ra?tional life and?work.

My friend Joanne Kaliontzis once asked Mr Vignelli what was left that he would like to redesign. His answer was the Catholic Church; he would wel?come the chal?lenge to redesign their visual lan?guage. Vignelli claimed he would start by telling the Holy Father, ?I love the logo, but every?thing else has to?go.?

How the iPad Mini Stacks Up to Google's Nexus 7

Apple VP Phil Schiller spent awhile at Tuesday's iPad Mini event talking trash about Google's similarly-sized Nexus 7 tablet, according to Android Central's Alex Dobie. The Nexus 7, made in partnership with Asus, is specially designed to run the latest version of Android, and gets frequent feature updates much like Apple devices do. It also came out months before the iPad Mini, and millions of the small, $199 tablets have been sold so far.

It's clear that Apple has the Nexus 7 in its sights. So how does the iPad Mini compare to Google's flagship tablet?

Not much bigger (except for its screen)

The iPad Mini is only about half an inch wider than the Nexus 7, but features a 7.9 inch screen with 35 percent more area than the Nexus 7's ... in other words, it has a screen a third larger in a chassis that's roughly the same size. It's also about three-quarters the thickness, and has a precisely-machined aluminum unibody chassis which comes in white as well as gray, unlike the Nexus 7's (slightly creaky) dark gray plastic case.

Somewhat worse screen

The iPad Mini has a sharper screen than last year's iPad 2, because it packs the same number of pixels (1024 x 768) into a smaller display. It's not as sharp as the Nexus 7's 1280 x 800 widescreen display, which can play back 720p movies at their native aspect ratio the same way the iPhone 5 can, but the iTunes store does have a better selection of movies.

Speaking of iTunes ...?

The iPad Mini's biggest advantage is its superior selection of games, movies, books, and apps available through Apple's stores. Hundreds of thousands of apps have been made for iPad since its launch, and the iPad Mini can basically run all of them. In contrast, few Android games and apps are specifically made for tablets, and some Android smartphone apps (like Flickr's, and Amazon.com's shopping app) don't even run on the Nexus 7.

On the other hand, due to Apple's policy on in-app purchases you can't buy new Kindle or Nook books through their apps on an iPad. You have to use the web browser instead.

?More options?

The iPad Mini comes in both white and gray models, whereas the Nexus 7 only comes in dark gray. And while the Nexus 7 only comes with 8 or 16 GB of flash memory, the iPad Mini starts at 16 GB and goes up to 64, although a 32 GB Nexus 7 model has been seen in the wild and is expected on retail store shelves soon.

There's no 3G / 4G wireless Internet option available for either yet. But Apple has announced that a 4G iPad Mini will be available in "mid-November", while Google is expected to unveil a new Nexus 7 model with 3G or 4G at an event next week.

?Much higher price tag?

The 8 GB Nexus 7 starts at $199, while the 16 GB model is $249 (and the 32 GB model is expected to replace it at that price point). The 16 GB iPad Mini, on the other hand, doesn't cost much less than last year's full-sized iPad 2, at $329. The addition of cellular networking and up to 64 GB of memory pushes its price tag up to $659, compared to a fully kitted-out full-sized iPad's $829 price.

The iPad Mini may not be the cheapest tablet. But when it goes up for preorder on Oct. 26, it'll be the cheapest way to get a new iPad.

10 Ways You Can Help Children of Alcoholics | Addiction Recovery

children of alcoholicsAmong the most tragic consequences of addiction is the devastating ? and sometimes lifelong ? impact on the children of an addict. More than 28 million Americans are children of alcoholics. Prescription drug addiction has been rising over the past decade, with more stories about moms keeping their addiction secret. While many of these children go on to lead healthy, productive lives, they also struggle in a way that is characteristic of their upbringing. For example, we know that children of alcoholics:

? Are up to four times more likely to struggle with alcoholism and other drug abuse than other kids.

? Exhibit more symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other emotional and behavioral disorders than children from non-addicted families.

? Score lower on academic achievement tests and have other difficulties in school.

? Take on too much or too little responsibility to compensate for the lack of parenting they receive from an addict.

? Struggle in interpersonal relationships as a result of mistrust and deficits in communication skills (50 percent of children of alcoholics marry an alcoholic).

? Are more likely to witness domestic violence and become victims of abuse, incest, neglect and other childhood traumas, sometimes resulting in removal from the home.

In the midst of active addiction, the addict can do little to help themselves, not to mention their children. So what can spouses, relatives, friends, neighbors and others do to help when they see a child suffering in an addicted home?

#1 Get Help for the Addicted Parent. A parent?s influence, whether positive or negative, is a powerful force in a child?s life. Whenever possible, get the addict out of the home and into treatment until they are firmly grounded in their recovery. Continuing to subject a child to the unpredictability and despair that an addict brings creates a toxic home environment that keeps everyone ? not just the addict ? sick. Only with some form of (preferably long-term) help, whether inpatient drug rehab, a sober living home or otherwise, can the entire family system get well.

#2 Get Help for the Child. Children of alcoholics need ongoing help just like their addicted parent does. In addition to receiving support from trusted adults in their lives, reach out to the school guidance counselor, a family therapist or child psychologist, support groups such as Alateen and other resources. Support groups play a particularly important role as children need to know they are not alone in their struggles.

#3 Explain the Disease. Children need to know that addiction is a disease caused by a combination of genetics, environment, trauma and other factors ? not by the child. Free them from the guilt and shame most children of alcoholics carry by frequently reminding them that their parent?s addiction is not their fault. Just like people with diabetes and heart disease, their parent is sick and needs treatment to get better.

#4 Have Compassion. Some children respond to the chaos of addiction by withdrawing into their own worlds or covering up with jokes, while others become angry and try to detract from the addiction by creating problems of their own. While these behaviors need to be addressed, the underlying emotion ? sadness ? deserves empathy and support. What they?re going through is unfair and they know it.

#5 Create Rituals. Studies show that maintaining certain rituals, such as family night or holiday traditions, can counteract some of the chaos addiction brings. Rituals provide a sense of stability and can be instituted by a sober parent or relative, or by getting the child involved in activities in the community.

#6 Cultivate Resilience. Ever wonder why some children of alcoholics go on to lead normal, productive lives while others follow in their addicted parent?s footsteps? The answer is, in part, resilience, which is a skill that can be learned at any age. Children who are taught how to communicate, focus on the positives, distance themselves from the family dysfunction and lean on supportive adults for help are more likely to beat the odds of becoming addicts themselves.

#7 Build Healthy Relationships. Since their addicted parent constantly lies and breaks promises, children of alcoholics often feel that they can?t trust anyone, especially authority figures. Building relationships with trustworthy adults can teach kids what a healthy relationship looks like, complete with honesty, give-and-take and respectful communication.

#8 Have Fun. Children of addicts face significant trauma at a time when their biggest concern should have been making friends or not getting too dirty on the playground. Since ?fun? isn?t something they?ve directly experienced, they may need help letting loose and enjoying life. Doing so will help combat the pessimism and hopelessness that result from feeling powerless to change their situation.

#9 Encourage Open Discussion. An addicted home is full of secrets, lies and loneliness. Since their feelings never mattered, children of alcoholics may have difficulty identifying and expressing their emotions. These deficits can be addressed by asking how they are doing, listening actively and without judgment, and being readily available to talk.

#10 Nurture Self-Esteem. Between holding themselves accountable for the addicted parent?s problems and feeling unworthy of their parent?s love (and sobriety), many children of addicts suffer pervasive low self-esteem. They may desperately seek approval from others, which often leads to high-risk behavior in trying to win over their peers. Supportive adults can bolster the child?s self-confidence by offering unconditional love and getting them involved in activities that both challenge and reward them.

It is often said that ?it takes a village to raise a child.? This proverb is never more true than for children who grow up in addicted homes. Having loving, supportive adults around who are willing and able to fill in the missing pieces left by the addicted parent can ensure that a child receives the skills and nurturing they need to thrive in the face of trauma.

Vets say late pay from VA cripples their finances

DENVER (AP) ? Exasperated veterans who work part-time for the Veterans Administration while attending college say their paychecks are sometimes weeks late, leaving them in trouble with bill collectors or having to borrow money to avoid eviction.

The two-week paycheck is typically about $360, and can be vital to veterans raising families and juggling expenses.

"It's absolutely crucial," said Neal Boyd, an Army veteran who has two children, attends Danville Area Community College in Illinois and works for the VA in the school's career services office to help other veterans.

The VA work-study program lets them work an average of up to 25 hours a week on the VA payroll if they are full-time or three-quarter-time college students.

The program is separate from other GI Bill benefits such as tuition and textbook assistance and a housing allowance that varies by location. But veterans said those benefits don't cover all their expenses, and they need a job to make ends meet.

The veterans were paid a total of $25.7 million in fiscal year 2011 ? the most recent year for which statistics were available. They are paid the federal minimum wage, $7.25 an hour, or their state's minimum wage, whichever is higher.

The number of veterans in the program depends on the needs of their schools, and veterans qualify based on their financial need and other factors, the VA said. Veterans who want to join the program submit a contract to the VA for approval.

More than 10,000 veterans are in the VA work-study program nationwide, but it's difficult to pin down how widespread the paycheck delays are.

The VA said on average, the checks are issued less than a week after time cards are received by the VA, but acknowledged they have been delayed at a processing center in St. Louis, one of four nationwide, because of a heavy workload and the loss of three workers.

In a statement, the department said it hired more workers in St. Louis last month and now has six assigned to process work-study paper work. The St. Louis office cut the processing time for paychecks to five days, down from an average as high as 12 days in some months, the statement said.

The St. Louis office handles work-study time cards and contracts from 19 states, mostly in the Midwest.

The VA said it is investigating some individual cases and looking for other changes to speed up the checks. It said it wants to ensure that all veterans get their benefits on time.

Two Colorado veterans who queried VA work-study students in several states say they found that 48 percent said it usually takes two to four weeks to get their checks. Nearly 13 percent said more than a month.

The two veterans, Ashley Metcalf and Morgan Sforzini, said they were having problems getting paid and wondered whether other veterans were.

A total of 88 VA work-study students from 16 states answered their written questions. More than half were in states that submitted their time cards to the St. Louis office.

Six veterans interviewed by The Associated Press reported delays of up to two months in getting a paycheck or getting approval for the contract allowing them to hold a work-study job. They also complained of long waits on hold when calling about the checks and contracts.

Veterans at the University of Colorado, Denver, keep score to see "who cannot get paid the longest," said Metcalf, an Air Force veteran who has a work-study job. The record is 90 days.

The veterans find various work-arounds when their checks are late, from getting emergency loans to temporarily getting on their college's payroll.

Loki Jones, an Army Special Forces veteran who served in Iraq, said he had to borrow money to pay his rent last spring because his work-study check was about three months late.

Jones, a student at the University of Colorado, Denver, said his contract was lost and then his time card was held up at least twice, once because he failed to initial parts of it.

"If I hadn't gotten that emergency loan, if that hadn't gone through, I would have gotten kicked out of my apartment for sure," he said.

Air Force veteran Jon Bohlander, who attends Johnson County Community College in Kansas, said he submitted a contract extension in late May or early June for a job during the college's summer session. The approved extension came back on July 27, a day before the session ended.

VA rules allowed him to put in his hours anyway because he was seeking an extension on an existing contract, not a new one, said Kena Zumalt, work-study supervisor for the college. He was paid two weeks after his contract extension was approved.

Bohlander, a single parent of three, has asked Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-Kan., for help getting the VA to pay. After Yoder's office made inquiries, the turnaround improved for two or three weeks, but then it "just falls back into the routine again," he said.

Cheyne Worley, who works in Yoder's Overland Park, Kan., office, said seven or eight veterans in the program have told him about pay delays in the past year. The VA should be better prepared to deal with the wave of 1.4 million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, he said.

"It shouldn't fall on the backs of the student veterans. They've done their duty," he said.

The work-study jobs usually involve helping other veterans sign up for benefits or processing paperwork at colleges or VA offices. Others work at VA hospitals or cemeteries.

The veterans say they hang on to the jobs despite the problems because their days and hours are flexible and they prize the loyalty and friendship of their co-workers and bosses. They also feel an obligation to help other veterans navigate through college life, a radically different world from the military.

"It's my duty to do that," Metcalf said. "And I take that on, even though I'm not getting paid in a timely manner."

Calm returns to Lebanon as troops deploy

BEIRUT (AP) ? Calm returned to the streets of Lebanon's capital on Tuesday, a day after troops launched a major security operation to quell fighting touched off by the assassination of a top anti-Syrian intelligence chief.

The country's police chief late Monday released details of the investigation into the killing of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, describing a carefully planned car bombing that targeted the intelligence officer as he was moving about the capital in secret.

Many in Lebanon blame Syria for the killing. Damascus has intervened heavily in Lebanese affairs and is blamed for the deaths of many prominent critics. Al-Hassan was a Sunni who challenged Syria and its powerful Lebanese ally, the Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

Seven people have died in clashes between pro- and anti-Syria factions sparked by the Friday assassination. The blast, the deadliest in Beirut in four years, killed two people in addition to al-Hassan.

Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi told a group of journalists that al-Hassan was assassinated outside one of his secret offices where he used to meet with informants. He was driving an unarmored rented car for camouflage. Al-Hassan was one of Lebanon's most secretive figures, and until his death many Lebanese did not know what he looked like.

"The martyr Wissam had an appointment in this office and it seems he was watched," Rifi said, adding that the booby-trapped car went off as al-Hassan's car was passing slowly by through the narrow street. The secret office in the predominantly Christian neighborhood of Achrafieh is few hundred meters (yards) away from the heavily-fortified police headquarters where al-Hassan spent most of his time while in Lebanon.

He also said investigators had identified the car used in the bombing as one stolen a year earlier.

Rifi confirmed reports from Washington that an FBI team will arrive to help in the investigation in the next two days. FBI teams helped investigate several bombings since 2005.

A senior security official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said al-Hassan entered through Beirut's airport using a fake name and after he reached his office, he sent his passport to the airport to be stamped. The official said this could be one of the ways how it became known al-Hassan is in Lebanon.

The official added that al-Hassan was supposed to stay in Paris with his family for more than week to celebrate the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha that starts Friday, but it is not clear why he returned to Lebanon.

The circumstances were similar to two other assassinations of Damascus critics: the 2005 killing of newspaper editor and lawmaker Gibran Tueni and the 2007 death of Christian lawmaker Antoine Ghanem from the right-wing Phalange Party. Both died in car bomb blasts shortly after returning to Lebanon from abroad, in secret.

The daily As-Safir reported that security authorities now have the data of al-Hassan's mobile phone and are checking it specifically from the time he landed in Beirut until he was killed. His last call was to former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, telling him he was in Beirut.

Al-Hassan was very close to Hariri and in the past was in charge of the security of his father, former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. He investigated Hariri's killing by a truck bomb in 2005, also widely blamed on Syria. An international tribunal indicted four members of Hezbollah for Hariri's killing, although the group denies involvement.

Al-Hassan's work led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon, who is accused of plotting a wave of attacks in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's most senior aides, was indicted in absentia in the August sweep.

Officials say his department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon in recent years. Israel has never commented on the allegations.

The assassination has dramatically escalated political tensions and sparked violence between supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad and his opponents. Lebanon and Syria share similar sectarian divides that have fed tensions in both countries. Most of Lebanon's Sunnis have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Lebanese Shiites tend to back Assad, who belongs to the minority Alawite sect ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Angry protesters tried to storm the government palace after al-Hassan's funeral on Sunday, venting their rage at leaders they consider puppets of the Syrian regime. But they were pushed back by troops who fired their guns in the air and filled the street with tear gas.

On Tuesday Prime Minister Najib Mikati, whose Cabinet is dominated by Hezbollah and its allies, resumed work at the palace and received EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who later met President Michel Suleiman.

Life in Beirut was normal Tuesday a day after troops conducted major operations opening roads and forcing gunmen out of the streets. Schools and businesses opened as usual.

In the northern city of Tripoli, security officials reported that the army deployed to separate gunmen from rival factions following sporadic exchanges of gunfire lasting until Tuesday morning.

Wildlife Officials Hold Exotic Pet Amnesty Day

Pet owners can surrender their nonnative pets ? free of charge and no penalties ? during an Exotic Pet Amnesty Day in Davie, Fla.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is holding the event Saturday at Tree Tops Park. A wildlife commission report says the goal is to reduce the number of nonnative species being released into the wild by pet owners who can no keep them.

The events have been successful in the past, especially in Miami. This is the first amnesty day to be held in Broward County.

Jenny Novak, who coordinates the program, says pet owners may not understand the ?negative impacts? of releasing a nonnative species and this event gives them a legal alternative.

It?s illegal to release any animal not native to Florida.

Chinese herbs, including JHQG, BFXL, and BFHX, may show significant benefits for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and influenza.

In three separate studies, researchers from China Academy of Chinese Medical Science in Beijing analyzed the health benefits of Chinese herbs on patients with NSCLC, IPF, and seasonal influenza. Researchers found that JHQG helped to prolong survival in patients with metastatic NSCLC compared with patients receiving standard care; was safe and effective in the management of IPF and could also help improve patients' quality of life and activity capacity; and helped to reduce fever in patients with influenza compared with placebo.

Researchers conclude that Chinese herbs could be used as an alternative treatment for the aforementioned conditions.

This study was presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held October 20 25, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Stroke patients benefit from carmaker's efficiency

Friday, October 19, 2012

A process developed to increase efficiency and productivity in Japanese car factories has helped improve stroke treatment at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, report researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

By applying the principles of Toyota's lean manufacturing process, doctors sharply reduced the average time between patient arrival and treatment, known as door-to-needle time, from 58 to 37 minutes.

The findings are reported Oct. 18 in the journal Stroke. In an average year, the medical school's physicians treat 1,300 stroke patients at Barnes-Jewish.

Beginning stroke treatment earlier can help prevent the brain damage that causes paralysis and loss of speech after a stroke. The researchers say the drop in treatment time results from applying a key component of lean manufacturing to patient care: getting input from all members of the team to identify inefficient steps involved in the process.

"We sought suggestions from everyone involved, from the paramedics who bring in patients, to admitting clerks, radiology technologists, nurses and physicians," says senior author Jin-Moo Lee, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and director of the cerebrovascular disease section in the Department of Neurology. "Once the inefficient steps were identified, we developed a completely new protocol that eliminated them. This new treatment protocol helped us achieve one of the fastest door-to-needle times in the country."

Barnes-Jewish has a dedicated stroke team capable of quickly evaluating and treating patients with tPA, which breaks up blood clots in the brain that cause strokes. The earlier it is given, the more effective tPA is at preventing permanent brain damage caused by stroke.

Because tPA can cause dangerous bleeding in the brain and throughout the body, the drug can no longer be given if too much time elapses after a stroke begins. At that point, its risk outweighs the potential benefit. Ideally, the drug must be given within 60 minutes after a stroke begins, a period known as the "golden hour."

"We already had very good door-to-needle times, but we thought that we could do better," Lee says. "So we put all of our team members in a room for two days and asked them to evaluate each step in the door-to-needle process."

Experts at Barnes-Jewish with experience using the principles of lean manufacturing in a healthcare setting helped facilitate the discussion.

"Identifying steps that are wasteful and do not add value is a primary goal of lean manufacturing," says David Jaques, MD, vice president of Surgical Services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and a professor at the School of Medicine. "Lean has made it possible to speed the delivery of medication or blood, improve teamwork and communication and ensure that those caring for patients always have easy access to supplies and equipment."

One problem identified by the group was repeatedly moving patients from one location to another and back again. The staff decided it would be more efficient for paramedics to bring patients directly to the emergency department's CT scanner for evaluation rather than to a patient examination room.

The group also noted that some aspects of patient care performed in sequence instead could be carried out simultaneously with the addition of extra staff. With two treatment nurses per patient, for example, one nurse can put in an IV while another gets medications. A neurologist and an emergency department physician also were assigned tasks that could be performed at the same time to speed patient care.

"We also added new specialties to the treatment team," Lee says. "We asked social workers to help identify people who were with the patient when the suspected stroke began. While they are talking with family members or co-workers, we can begin the initial assessment."

Finally, lab work for the patients was taking too long.

"Where we could, we instituted lab tests that could be performed at the bedside in minutes instead of sending the blood to the lab and waiting 30 minutes or more for results," Lee says.

The new treatment procedures were implemented in February 2011. The changes not only lowered average door-to-needle times by nearly 40 percent, but they also increased the percent of patients treated within "the golden hour" from 52 - 78 percent.

After the new procedures were put in place, the researchers monitored patients for side effects of treatment, including hemorrhages, and to make sure the accelerated process did not result in more patients getting the clot-busting drug when they were later determined to be stroke free. Neither of these negative outcomes increased.

Accelerating door-to-needle times for stroke treatment is only one example of how lean principles can be applied to improve patient care. Barnes-Jewish has already used lean principles to improve the delivery of blood products to patients, enhance patient access to radiological procedures, create more efficient operating room procedures and shorten hospital stays, according to Jaques.

"Lean principles used in manufacturing can be applied to patient care to create a higher quality, safer and more efficient hospital," Jaques says.

Rwanda wins non-permanent seat on UN Security Council - African ...

Rwanda?s win of a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council has met with some controversy.

The country along with Argentina and Australia received enough votes from among the 193 member states to secure a non-permanent seat.

Each year the 15-member council, the UN?s most powerful committee, renews five of its 10 non-permanent seats, assigning them on a regional basis.

Each needed at least 129 votes and Rwanda received 148, while Australia took 140 and Argentina 182.

However, Rwanda won the seat despite a leaked UN report accusing the country of fuelling a rebellion in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Rwanda?s Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo has denied the accusations made in the UN report and thanked the Assembly for voting it onto the council for the first time since the genocide in the country.

Mushikiwabo said: ?The contrast could not be sharper between that previous tenure ? when a genocidal government occupied a prized? Security Council seat as its agents waged genocide back home ? and the Rwanda of today: a nation of peace, unity, progess and optimism."

MORE from African Business Review

The two remaining seats were being fought between the Asia-Pacific region, where it was between South Korea, Bhutan and Cambodia, while for the so-called Western European and Others Group, Finland and Luxembourg were vying for the last seat.

The five holders of new seats take them up in January for a two-year stint. The permanent members, wielding veto power, are the United States, China, France, Britain and Russia.

Baby elephant rescue will steal your heart

A baby stuck in a well. A frantic mother crazed with worry for her offspring. Anyone could relate, but these very human emotions came from the bond of an elephant baby and her mother. And a video capturing the rescued calf has captivated the Web.

Just your typical day in Amboseli National Park in Kenya, where a team of elephant conservationists from the Amboseli Trust for Elephants received a call about a baby stuck in an five-foot hole dug by Masai tribesmen. They raced to the site of the accident.

The baby was fine, but the hole was too deep for the eight-month-old calf to climb out. And the mother was unable to help.

To complicate matters, the mother thought the rescuers were a threat, and almost sat on the Land Rover. The driver, Dr. Vicki Fishlock, resident scientist of the elephant trust, recognized the mother, Zombe, from a mark on her ear.

The scientist scared her away with a high-pitched yell and maneuvered around her, as two men managed to get rope around the baby. By attaching the line to an SUV and putting the vehicle into reverse, they were able to pull the elephant calf out.

A happy ending, but especially rewarding because the video captures the baby's sprint to its mother's side.

The rescue is a reminder of the challenges faced by humans and elephants that share the land. Without the rescue, the elephant would have died in the well, causing conflict with the Masai.

The Amboseli Trust for Elephants website noted, "Luckily the report came in early in the morning and we were able to get there quick before the mother was forced to leave by herders arriving to water their cattle. It was a happy ending as we were able to reunite the calf with her mother, Zombe."

The organization has a longtime relationship with the elephants, which it has been studying since 1972, as well as the Masai. Fishlock noted to Yahoo News in an email, "Our biggest fears for the elephants of Amboseli and elsewhere lie not with their sharing land with the Maasai, who we work with and who report elephant emergencies to us, but from the burgeoning ivory trade."

Indeed, thousands of elephants are slaughtered across Africa for their ivory tusks, used to make trinkets that are in high demand in Asia.

Fishlock added, " We are delighted by the web response to our video, and we hope it persuades people that elephants are special and deserve to be protected and cherished."

Kalmar RT Center, the world?s only manufacturer of rough terrain reach stackers, announced its expansion into the commercial market at the DUG Eagle Ford Shale Conference. Kalmar also announced its first commercial sale of Kalmar RT240 Rough Terrain Reach Stackers to assist one of the world?s largest energy projects.

Initially produced exclusively for the United States Armed Forces, the Kalmar RT240 Rough Terrain Reach Stacker is capable of handling 20 foot and 40 foot ISO containers across virtually any landscape. The RT240 is the only reach stacker capable of working in unimproved ground conditions, harsh environments, and up to 27 percent grades. Its application versatility is expanded by the availability of fork and sling lift attachments.

Toll Group, the Asian region?s leading provider of integrated logistic services, purchased four Kalmar RT240 Rough Terrain Reach Stackers for the Gorgon Project, one of the world?s largest natural gas projects. The Gorgon Project is a joint venture led by Chevron Australia to develop the greater Gorgon gas fields, Australia?s largest-known gas resource. Toll Group will use the RT240 to add capacity and efficiency to the freight and materials handling operations at the dock and construction sites in the remote location where previous operations have failed to meet schedule.

The Toll Group RT240 purchase marks a new era for Kalmar RT Center in the commercial sector and an opportunity for companies around the globe to now use the same battle- tested equipment used by the military.

?The Kalmar equipment with its attachments ? whether it?s a sling load attachment or a fork lift attachment ? has the ability to perform the functions of four of five pieces of equipment on a drill site,? said retired Col. WiFi Overview 360 Pro (for Android)

WiFi Overview Pro is a wireless analyzer and sniffer that runs on an Android phone or tablet. While this lightweight app (which costs the odd sum of $1.31, there's free edition too, subject to ads) is not a substitute for enterprise-level wifi analyzers that can do reporting, auditing and aid in troubleshooting wireless network issues?the app servers as a portable wireless tool that offers handy information about wireless networks in an area. There are a few issues here and there with the app not doing what it's supposed to do, but otherwise quite impressive for the price.

WiFi Overview Pro's Capabilities
On my Android phone (somewhat dated with the Gingerbread software) I can't see much information about wireless networks other than the signal strength as represented by fours bars, the encryption level of a WLAN, link speed, and the IP address the Android device receives when connected. Pretty basic information within the native OS.
Even other Wi-Fi Android apps I've tested such as Wi-Fi Ruler and Fing, don?t provide much more than the information you can see natively within the Android OS.

There's a lot more information displayed in WiFi Overview. On the main screen alone all of the wireless networks nearby are displayed with color-coded signal strength bars for each network. The color coding indicates if the network is one to which you are connected, a known network, or an open network.

In addition, the main screen provides the SSID, MAC address, channel and frequency. A quick tap on the wi-fi network I connected to, provided even more detail: the signal strength in dbm, wifi speed, IP address, netmask, gateway, DHCP and DNS servers, and the external IP address of any WAN/Internet connection.? There's also a graph rendered in real-time which displays the signal strength as you are connected.

Interface
WiFi Overview managed to pack a lot of information into the relatively small screen of my Android phone, without making the interface seem crowded. There are menu buttons at the top of the home screen. The "Main" button returns you to back to the home screen. "Wi-Fi Info" opens up that detailed information on a wireless network that you can get by tapping on the network from the home screen, "Graph" will display signal strength graphs for all wireless networks in the location.

Two features are particularly useful. One is "Ch. Check," short for "Channel Check." This feature will tell which channel a wireless network is set, and give recommendations for the best, least-crowded channel. "Ch. Radar"?short for "Check Radar" shows the signal strength of all networks in real-time and in decibels. These are two features that boost the app to a professional level as they could be used to monitor and configure access points in an infrastructure and aid in setting them for optimum performance.

I also really like the ability to create a quick shortcut to a WLAN you connect to regularly especially since you can't do that with the native Android OS.

Wi-Fi Sniffer
The app includes a Wi-Fi sniffer with customizable settings. For example, you can opt to auto-connect to an open wireless network, or set the connection sensitivity (which is at -81 dbm, by default). You can also enable notifications when a connection is made.

The customization is where I encountered an issue. I first had the sniffer set to auto-connect to open networks, which it did just fine. When I disabled this feature, the app still connected to the open network and even a complete reboot of my phone did not help.

I also noticed the app shows a lock next to a secured network?as is standard in wireless software. Yet, when I removed security from an access point, the lock remained in the interface next to that network.

Exiting out of the app also requires a few taps on the "back" button before the app would close; not as pressing of an issue as auto-connect not disabling or not reporting the correct security, though.

Pocket Wireless Tool Needs Small Improvements
WiFi Overview 360 is a handy wireless tool that you can of course take on the go with your Android device. It offers a very sharp and colorful interface which the developed obviously put a lot of thought into. Flakiness with reporting security and auto-connection behavior needs to be addressed. Still for just a little over a buck, the app is worth for the channel information and other details you get alone and is a three star app for networking software.

Improving Your Online Reputation Using Video Marketing

There are two emerging fields in online marketing: video marketing and online reputation management. These two fields are so powerful when utilized correctly by business owners that the combination of the two can result in an overpowering brand dominance that few businesses are currently achieving.

?

This article will examine how video marketing in combination with a robust online reputation management campaign can literally skyrocket the bottom line for almost any business.

?

What Is Online Reputation Management?

?

To make sure that you have a solid understanding of these two powerful marketing methods, let?s first examine online reputation management.

?

Public relations companies have been around since before the newspaper was invented. Businesses have learned, through trial and error, that their reputation has a huge influence on the success of their business.

?

Customers are real human beings with real emotions. They display emotion, loyalty and apprehension towards companies that do not align with their moral values. It has historically been the responsibility of PR companies to make sure that brand messages and overall reputation have remained intact for those companies trying to reach out to their customers.

?

Online reputation management is simply the natural extension of that same principle into the online sphere. Online reputation management services provide business owners the opportunity to craft their reputation in such a way that accurately represents who they are, what their brand stands for, and that type of customer that they would like to attract.

?

What Is Video Marketing?

?

Video marketing is an incredibly powerful tool for communication. Unlike a text-based marketing system, such as direct mail or even websites, video marketing allows businesses to touch on emotional queues with individual customers and consumers. Video marketing has become even more powerful now that more individuals are gaining access to hand-held video cameras.

?

As more and more consumers are able to visually record the activities of businesses, marketing teams are able to take this content and spin it in a positive light to benefit a company.

?

Places like YouTube offer platforms in which these videos can be hosted and viewed by millions and millions of people. Video marketing allows businesses to truly reach further and deeper into the hearts and minds of their target market.

?

Video Marketing + Online Reputation Management = Success

?

Companies who are able to utilize video marketing and online reputation management at the same time, and in the same campaign, find themselves with an incredibly powerful tool at their disposal. Imagine, if you as a consumer were to go to a website, or even to find a video on YouTube that was an interview of a fellow consumer talking about the product that you are considering purchasing. Now imagine, that this interview was not staged, it did not feel like an infomercial, but it had a very honest approach and the review was positive.

?

Now imagine, that this same company has collected hundreds of these same type of interviews and posted them throughout the web. Imagine the impact that this single campaign could have on your business.

?

The cost of this campaign would be extremely low. It could be done with a simple iPhone video camera, YouTube and a simple website. As consumers began to learn more and more about your brand they would be exposed to more and more positive reviews in video format from real people.

?

The effect that these videos have on individuals is incredibly powerful. It is the same reason that direct marketers still continue to use high profile celebrities in their commercials. On the Internet, the average person has more power than even the most popular celebrity. The Internet loves authenticity.

?

Conclusion

?
